The CBC food columnist in the Waterloo Region, Andrew Coppolino, has noticed a power shift in the grocery aisles. Consumers are making demands and giant food chains are listening. In a recent article Cleanup in Aisle 3 , he points out that the battle over French’s and Heinz ketchup is one indication of shoppers turning into the bosses of the supermarket.
“If consumers can easily make demands and do so collectively and with a critical mass, then the way food is grown, processed and distributed is potentially subject to rapid and dramatic change.”
The next time you’re at the grocery store, speak up for more local food to support our farmers and Ontario’s $34-billion agri-food industry!
