The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, is raising concerns about looming shortages of the world’s freshwater. He says “under current trends, future demands for water will not be met.” According to Environment Canada, if all the water on Earth were contained in a standard office water cooler, only three teaspoons would be the freshwater critical to our survival.
Protecting vital water resources was one of the goals of the movement that stopped the Highland mega quarry. Highland wanted to blast open an aquifer at the headwaters of five river systems, impacting water for up to one million Ontarians downstream. As you’ll read, Ban Ki-moon understands the link between water resources and food security. The next time we’re in New York, we’ll be sure to drop off a Food & Water First lawn sign at the United Nations!
