This week the Cornerstone Standards Council (CSC) unveiled a draft report containing voluntary standards for Ontario’s aggregate industry. The CSC is comprised of representatives from the aggregate industry, environmental groups, community organizations and others. Its stated mission is to create a “voluntary certification system that will have a transformative effect on Ontario’s aggregate sector by introducing a less confrontational approach to the planning, siting and operation of aggregate sites.”
The CSC is accepting public comments on its suggested voluntary standards and principles for aggregate operators. The deadline is March 6th. Please read the report at the link below. Food & Water First will review the recommendations and comment on our findings in the weeks to come. As always, our chief concern is for the preservation of Class 1 farmland and source water regions from all non-farming development.
