Election Day: June 12!

Election Postcard - Front

Ontario voters are going to the polls June 12th and Food & Water First is campaigning, too! While the four parties seek your support, ask the candidates to stand up for this province’s Class 1 farmland and source water regions.

Election postcard - back

Thousands of Food & Water First postcards are being distributed throughout the province so voters can ask the politicians whether they will protect Ontario’s Class 1 farmland and water resources from sprawl, aggregate operations and other non-farming development. Candidates are being urged to take the Food & Water First PLEDGE. (We note the Green Party has already done so!)

Sample questions to ask the candidates:

Since 1976, Ontario has lost 2.8 million acres of farmland. This amount of land could feed 2.8 million people. What will your party do to ensure our rare agricultural soil is preserved for food production?

Ontario’s agri-food sector is the largest in Canada, pours $34 billion into the economy each year and employs 700,000 people. Yet, the very farmland that is critical to this sector is not properly protected. What will your party do to ensure this vital segment of our economy continues to thrive?

The fight to stop the Highland Mega Quarry highlighted the flaws in the Aggregate Resources Act. What steps will your party take to protect prime farmland and source water regions from pits and quarries or other development that negatively impact our agricultural and freshwater resources?
