While the Toronto mayoral race consumed a lot of headlines across the province, big changes are also taking place in Simcoe County, a battleground for several groups fighting to protect local farmland. One of the most contentious campaigns was in Springwater Township, where a heated fight is being waged to stop the development of 2000-acres of prime farmland in Midhurst. The famous Minesing Wetlands is also at risk. The Midhurst Ratepayers’ Association, a Food & Water First Partner, attracted author Margaret Atwood to its cause and backed supportive candidates in the municipal election. In all, 4 out of the 5 candidates endorsed by the group were elected including the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor!
There were other victories for anti-sprawl candidates, as well. Thanks to our Partner AWARE Simcoe for providing this summary.
