Ghost Airport or Foodland?

The 42-year battle to save the Pickering Lands scored another victory on January 27th. Land Over Landings appeared before Pickering City Council and made an eloquent and persuasive case for the preservation of 13,000-acres of Class 1 farmland slated for a new airport and development.

The Chair of LOL, Mary Delaney, reminded councillors that Durham Region’s agri-food sector is productive, diverse and vital, while another GTA airport is unnecessary. “Farmland isn’t just empty land waiting to be developed. It’s the land that feeds us,” she told a packed council chamber.

After she spoke, Pickering Council voted unanimously to ask Ottawa to present a business case justifying the proposed Pickering Airport, agree to an Environmental Assessment and be more transparent in its dealings with the community.  Congrats to Land Over Landings! Both the Ajax News and CityTV covered the meeting.
