“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” William Shakespeare
Welcome to Food & Water First as we celebrate April’s youthful spirit with our new website! This project has been in the works since last fall when the Highland Companies withdrew its application for the proposed mega quarry in Melancthon township. A fresh website was needed to reflect the legacy of that successful campaign: our dedication to protecting prime farmland and source water regions throughout Ontario. We believe we must preserve the land and water that sustain us. We believe Ontario should put Food & Water First.
This website will keep you up-to-date with the latest news from Queen’s Park, articles, research and videos. We will tell the stories of those devoted to putting Food & Water First. We will share the experiences of like-minded groups across the country and around the world. We will have fun, as well.
The grassroots movement that stopped the mega quarry made history. An unprecedented Environmental Assessment was ordered for the Highland application. We stood up to a $25-billion hedge fund and won. We organized two extraordinary events – Foodstock and Soupstock — that attracted nearly 70,000 people to the cause of preserving prime farmland and water resources. History can be made again with Food & Water First. Join us and help better our part of the world.
Our top story today is from Local magazine, a popular publication in the Toronto Beach community. It was written by Donna Tranquada, a volunteer in the Stop the Mega Quarry movement and former broadcaster with the CBC.
