Melancthon farmland SOLD!

After years of uncertainty, the Melancthon farmland so many of us fought to protect no longer belongs to the Highland Companies! A Canadian investment firm, Bonnefield Financial, has purchased all of Highland’s Class 1 farmland — including the 2300-acres that were proposed for the controversial Mega Quarry. In a release, Bonnefield’s president Tom Eisenhauer says “the land will continue to be used for farming.”

Bonnefield Statement here

This is a stunning development, one that raises hopes and questions. Is this the happy ending after years of turmoil? Is Bonnefield sincere in its statement that the farmland will remain in food production? Highland made similar claims when it first arrived in Ontario, yet in 2011, it applied for the largest quarry in Canadian history. Many are wary and it’s understandable.

But, according to those who know and have spoken to Tom Eisenhauer, it appears the firm’s intentions are what they state: “farmland for farming.” If so, thousands of acres of Honeywood silt loam will continue to grow our food and a happier chapter in the community’s history is unfolding.
