More Class 1 Farmland at Risk!

As more and more Food & Water First lawn signs appear in the countryside and Toronto, it seems the fight for prime farmland is heating up. Former Toronto Mayor John Sewell has written a column in the Toronto Star about the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan and what could be a devastating blow to its goals and Class 1 farmland. He writes that up to 100-thousand acres of the best agricultural land in the country could be growing houses instead of food.

Food In the Hills

“It takes anywhere from 160 to 200 years to build an inch of topsoil.” It’s another reason for us not to squander the only soil capable of growing our food! That’s the topic of an excellent column written by the editor of Food In the Hills magazine, which covers all things delicious in the Hills of Headwaters. Cecily Ross praises the campaign that stopped the Highland mega quarry (for now, at least) and how the Food & Water First movement continues to battle for the land and water that sustain us.
