No Life Without Soil

International soil experts gathered in Iceland last week to talk about the value of the earth beneath our feet and the threats facing it. The planet’s soil provides nearly all of our food. It cleans the water flowing into our rivers and lakes. It absorbs vast quantities of carbon, second only to the oceans. Yet, we continue to degrade it or destroy it. Are we reaching an era of Peak Soil? Stephen Leahy has written an excellent account of the conference.
