OFA President Backs Food & Water First!

The Food & Water First campaign has received a terrific boost. The president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Mark Wales, has released a statement supporting the citizens’ movement, saying it applauds grassroots organizations that encourage rural and urban residents to protect farmland and water resources. “Productive land is a farmer’s most important resource. Clean water is a close second.” The OFA represents 37,000 farm families across the province, so this statement is a tremendous endorsement.

CELEBRATE WITH THE ARMSTRONGS!

Armstrong family gathering

The Armstrongs of Melancthon are among the thousands of Ontario farm families who produce our food. Armstrongs have been stewards of their land for the past 160 years, so they understand its true value. When the Highland Companies tried to purchase their farm, Ralph and Mary Lynne Armstrong refused and helped lead the battle to stop the Mega Quarry. “Seven generations of Armstrongs have farmed this beautiful soil and cherished its life-giving properties,” says daughter Kate, who will be sellingArmstrong beef, pork and lamb at Celebrate Food & Water First with her husband, Steve Martin. The Armstrong cattle, pigs and sheep are born and raised on the farm, spending their time in pastures or barns with indoor and outdoor pens. As well, they are not fed any hormones or antibiotics.

“As farmers, our number one responsibility is to preserve our land so that there will be nutritious food to eat and clean water to drink for future generations,” says Kate. Look for the Armstrong Family Farm booth in the Honeywood Arena August 18th!
