Pave It or Save It?

“Having food lands close to where people live will be critical to sustaining local food security.”

Environmentalist David Suzuki wrote this recent column for the Toronto Star about the threat of urban sprawl to Ontario’s prime farmland and it’s worth revisiting as the Food &Water First spring campaign unfolds. He writes that almost one-half of Canada’s urban base now sits on land that once grew our food. Meanwhile, Ontario Farmland Trust reports that between 1976 and 1996,  the Greater Toronto Area lost 150,000-acres of farmland. David Suzuki writes: “Paving over our remaining farmland and natural assets such as wetlands is foolhardy.” Indeed.
