A vast swatch of Alberta ranch land is now protected thanks to an historic deal between 72 ranchers and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The Globe and Mail article about this unique arrangement points out that similar easements are difficult in southern Ontario because there are fewer large parcels of land protect. However, several hundred acres of farmland have been preserved thanks to the Ontario Farmland Trust and land owners.
Edward Burtynsky’s documentary “Watermark” received much attention and great reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. The world-renowned photographer (and supporter in the mega quarry fight) was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal and he shared a startling anecdote from a bar in Australia involving a glass of water.
