“Global soil assessment is a matter of some urgency.”
It grows our food, can prevent disease and contains nearly one-third of all living organisms. Yet, according to an article in the New York Times, we don’t know enough about the soil we rely on for survival. Scientists have launched a global study into the biodiversity of soil and the threats it faces. Here at home, just .5 percent of Canada is comprised of Class 1 soil and more than half of it is in Ontario. Protecting it is the prime goal of Food & Water First. We echo the sentiments of one of the scientists who says “It’s showtime for soil biodiversity.”
